Maeva - 6 Month Portraits

Posted by Andrea T on Saturday, July 31, 2010, In : Maeva

Along with the sling (which I didn't mention was on clearance...and my favourite fabric choice was in my size!).  We also got some new Thirsties diaper covers from The Cloth Diaper Shop, because Maeva's growing and Anderson is totally not interested in the potty.  I love the new Thirsties duo wrap in "Blackbird", which became Maeva's wardrobe for her impromptu 6 month portraits.  Here's my smiley little girl.  And she got to steal the spotlight in these shots while Anderson napped yesterday.

clingy

Posted by Andrea T on Saturday, July 31, 2010, In : Maeva
Maeva is 6 months old and always wants to be in Mama's arms.  If she can see me she wants to be with me.  I know this is a normal part of development, but it can be very exhausting...especially the hourly wakings for just a little snuggle.  Or how she refuses to sit in the Bumbo to eat solids off a spoon.  She has to be on my lap eating off my finger.  I walked to the post office yesterday and our new sling had arrived. Yes!  A pouch sling that fits a bit tighter, which is way better for my b...

half birthday

Posted by Andrea T on Friday, July 23, 2010, In : Maeva
My little miss mu turned a half-year today.  We celebrated the same way we did for her big brother...with blueberries.  It is great to have your half birthday in the middle of Sudbury's Blueberry Festival.  Today was the blueberry garden party at the Ukrainian seniors centre.  She had a taste of the blueberries that where on top of my crepe.  First born had a proper photo taken on his 6 month birthday...well second born, sorry girl this is the best we got: 6 months. Likely teething.  But oh s...

Maeva's first solids

Posted by Andrea T on Friday, July 9, 2010, In : Motherhood
We were eating dinner and Maeva had a little pout like she wanted something too, despite having just fed.  Since she is so close to 6 months, I thought I'd let her try something. I had bought some organic peaches and apples with the intention of making a bit of food for her, but it has been so hot.  So I mashed a little bit of ripe banana instead.  She loved it!  I heard an interview on the CBC with the author of Sprout Right and I heard this quote, not sure if it was the author herself or on...

Summer Reading List

Posted by Andrea T on Friday, May 28, 2010, In : Outdoors
I'm excited for the summer reading season.  With feet in the kiddie pool,on the dock, in the gazebo by lantern light, while camping, at the beach...lots of great opportunities to make my way through some books.

Here's my nice new pile of books for the summer:

Steady Days: A Journey Toward Intentional, Professional Motherhood by Jamie C. Martin
Secret Daughter by Shili Somaya Gowda
The Help by Kathryn Stockett
The Hurried Child: Growing up too Fast too Soon by David Elkind
Unless by Carol Shields

April - 30

Posted by Andrea T on Saturday, May 1, 2010, In : Art

Well the month is over.  I did it, I shot and posted a photo for each day in April.  It was fun, and I have quite the collection of images, posted and not posted.  I'm liking the vintage look, square crop and may continue building a set of them.  I started a Flickr account, and may start using Blogger instead, so that I can upload to Flickr and then send the photos to the blog.  I'm still playing around and figuring this whole thing out.  I'll have to think of a May project.  It is good to ke...

April - 28

Posted by Andrea T on Thursday, April 29, 2010, In : Art

So my camera battery died and I didn't put it on the charger.  We went to Science North today and I missed so many cute photo ops of Anderson and his friend Emmy checking out all the dinos and playing in water and holding hands.  Then the evening flew by...and I never really felt like going all the way upstairs to fetch the charger out of my suitcase.  So finally at bedtime, by the light of the rock lamp, I got this shot.  You know you're safe to leave the room and she is finally asleep when ...

Posted by Andrea T on Monday, April 26, 2010, In : Art

I just realized this post may generate some opinions, if they are negative...here you are. Anyhoo...this post is about travelling with baby.  We almost ended up eating peanuts for dinner, because we couldn't get her to stop fussing. Yay for purple crying . (well, this ended up being a linky post).  So, by midnight we came to terms with the fact that going out for dinner was no longer an option.  We had a room service steak dinner at midnight (our second meal of the day...after breakfast at no...

Quilts

Posted by Andrea T on Friday, February 5, 2010, In : Creativity

A Christmas of quilts.  Before the holidays, I finished a quilt for myself that I had been working on for years.  In December I made one for John for xmas, all tartan fabrics.  And Anderson received one that I started when I was 16 and first learning to quilt from my Grandmaman.  There are still a few more on the go, a small one for a baby girl that I started back in highschool as well. And a nine-patch with pastel prints.  I found a great quilt at the Lively craft show, "Woodland Winter", ...

Ander and Johnny

Posted by Andrea T on Thursday, September 17, 2009, In : Family
Yesterday, we picked up the table and chair set that was mine as a child.  Anderson has been loving it to set up all his "guys" for snack time.  John must have had the exact same set, because I found a photo of him sitting at it at age 2.  Anderson turned 20 months today...so pretty much the same age.  I couldn't find any photos of myself at the set.

Yoga with a toddler...

Posted by Andrea T on Saturday, September 12, 2009, In : Anderson

...I have to say is the cutest thing ever.  I’ve signed up for prenatal yoga, but I thought I’d get a head start at home and involve Anderson.  I lit some candles and put on India Solitudes and set out with little expectations (having a toddler underfoot).  It worked out great.  I’d be doing downward dog or cat pose and I had this little person weaving between my arms and legs in a fit of giggles.  Then I was in a squat, with hands in prayer and there he was right beside me doing the sa...

The last of summer

Posted by Andrea Traynor on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, In : Family

It was another perfect labour day weekend.  The weather was great, so it really was a last hurrah to summer.  We had a picnic at Fielding Park (in case it rains on our anniversary), went to Ribfest twice (I kept craving BBQ sauce, so the pulled pork sandwich hit he spot), boat ride on Long Lake, I squeezed in a swim, and we had a BBQ and ate outside, John played 9 holes one afternoon while Anderson and I napped, we read the paper, drank coffee, let Anderson stay up late (and then he slept in ...

One of my favourite places

Posted by Andrea Traynor on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, In : Family

We’re trying to soak up the last of the summer sunshine; it seems to have all come at once, so we’re making the best of it.  We headed to the trails at Fielding Park to feed the ducks and Anderson had his first hike (that is not being carried).  He loved running through the forest.  I especially loved taking him to the “birch forest” area.  It is a place that really grounds me and makes me feel so serene.  I spent many days walking through this area before I was pregnant, while pregna...

Summer Evening

It is the way you put one Cheerio on each plate

It is the way the air is cool.

It is the way our hair shimmers like copper.

…and the way the world spins around

It is the way we look up in wonder.

It is the way I hold you close on my back.

spring will awaken creativity

Posted by Andrea Traynor on Friday, May 15, 2009, In : Creativity

So I haven’t written in a while.  I know many blogs fail because they just aren’t updated.  Well I better get back on this creative endeavor.   I guess I just want to make it good.  But why does it have to be perfect.

It is spring.  I love spring.  This season has been even richer with discovery, with Anderson by my side.  We’ve been spending hours outside, until our hands and noses are icy cold.  Then we go inside for snacks and a warm bath.  He discovered dandelions for the first ...

Remembering Grandpapa

Posted by Andrea Traynor on Friday, March 13, 2009, In : Family

I wanted to do this right away, but I just did not get a chance.  I wanted to make sure I could devote the time and really make it good.  I’ve reflected a lot over the last month, though.  So now all my thoughts have been gathering slowly, but surely.  Probably all the best stuff came into my head right after he was gone though.

It was a little unexpected I guess.  I had been preparing myself for losing my Grandmaman at some point, because she was diagnosed with cancer.  But when...

boys and dolls.

Posted by Andrea Traynor on Friday, March 13, 2009, In : Motherhood

Anderson has accumulated a few dolls since he was born; I even dug up my old favourite dolls from my childhood.  Dolls were hands-down my favourite toy, so I was excited to dig them out.  And it doesn’t really matter that he is a boy, I don’t want to only expose him to gender stereotyped toys for boys.  I like a wide variety of play things for him.  What is with the pale pink and lavender flower-clad girl clothes and toys and the royal blue and red airplane/truck/car themed clothes and ...

Some restaurants don’t have a highchair, namely Laughing Buddha (they do have a change table now) and relatives and friends who don’t have babies, usually don’t have highchairs.  I have a little fold up seat that can clip onto a chair, but sometimes I have so much to carry, and it is just one more thing, that I’d rather not carry.  Especially if I am downtown and going to the gym, I already have a backpack, diaper bag and Anders hanging off me in a sling.  So I’ve taken one of my Ba...

Anderson had his first taste of Nonni's Tuna Fish Spaghetti.  And he loved it!!  Some pepole think it is weird to eat tuna spaghetti, but it is sooo good, and a nice alternative to beef.  Well Anderson will never think it is weird, because he's going to grow up on it, like I did.  That and Cottage Cheese and Macaroni (an easier, healthier, cheaper alternative to boxed Mac n Cheese), I think the cottage cheese and macaroni idea is from Baba.  Just cook macaroni (like baby shells) toss with som...

One Year Portrait

Here is my one year portrait of the little guy.  I can't believe a whole year has gone by.  He is more fun every day as his little character is emerging.  He can say Marbles "mabas" and "dada" and I think "mama" (he usually saves it for when he's whining and lifting my shirt).  And he started walking!!! Just last night!  A week earlier he took a few steps, but now he's steady and can do a number of steps and travel a few metres.  It's pretty exciting.  He's so proud of himself and goes into a...

cloth diaper info

Posted by Andrea Traynor on Friday, March 6, 2009, In : cloth diapers

As a cloth diapering mom, I want to spread the word on how easy it is. Much easier than I thought!  Cloth diapering has come a long way since a big piece of folded cotton, pins, and plastic pants.  And it's not like you have to drag them dirty diapers down to the river and scrub them with a rock.  Washing them is as easy as dumping a pail into the machine and pressing a button.  No more having stinky diapers hanging around all week waiting for garbage day, and no more running out of diapers...

Posted by Andrea Traynor on Friday, March 6, 2009, In : Creativity

It is usually around this time of year, that I need to put extra effort into trying to be creative.  I feel cooped up and that winter has been way too long.  I dream about lazy days outside in the sunshine, vintage quilts blowing in the breeze on the clothsline, a forest picnic, swimming in the moonlight, running barefoot in the sand (okay walking, I don't really like running).  But in reality, I don't need sunshine and warm weather to live creatively and passionately.  I just need a little i...

I've started working on my book.  It is a continuation of my thesis "The Women We Call Mothers", where I photographed and interviewed 12 women on the experience of being a mother.  I did this project out of my fascination with motherhood and my eagerness to one day become a mom myself.  This new project is about my personal journey into the first year of motherhood.  My expectations...and the raw reality of it all..and the eventual settling in to this new found role.
